Some of the best old school black gospel songs. Thanks for your comment. “Black gospel” is how people are searching for these songs online — presumably by African Americans. Just saying Gospel music can mean any Christian music of any style and is not very descriptive. “Southern Gospel” is just about the opposite of black gospel, for instance, so there needed to be some clarity here.
In gospel music circles, artists purposely try to avoid calling a certain singer "the best" because the nature and purpose of gospel music is to worship God in song. But one of the most revered gospel singers in history is Mahalia Jackson for her transformative gospel songs with Thomas Dorsey in the early days of gospel music.
Just curious. I grew up in the deep south, in real country churches so I cut my teeth on old southern, country, and bluegrass gospel. To this day I'm a big fan of those old songs (not in worship). I'm not a fan of new southern gospel. I always loved the Cathedrals, The Inspirations, The Good Shepherd Quartet, The Primitive Quartet, etc.
